World record holder Eliud Kipchoge will work closely with the Global Peace Foundation and the Chandaria Foundation to Champion I Million Forest Cover which is the brain child of the Global Peace Foundation Kenya patron Dr. Manu Chandaria.
This was revealed on May 11, 2022 during a virtual meeting between Mr. Kipchoge, Dr. Manu Chandaria, the Global Peace Foundation and the Standard Group PLC represented by the Head of Corporate Affairs Mr. Charles Kimathi to discuss how to collaborate in efforts to increase forest cover by establishing tree nurseries throughout the country. The partnership hopes to increase tree cover from the current 6% to 11% by growing trees in all the forty-seven counties in Kenya, with a target 1 million trees every year.
Dr. Manu Chandaria through the Chandaria Foundation committed to support setting up of more than 10 tree nurseries this year. Mr. Charles Kimathi and Mr. Paul Thiong’o of the Standard Group PLC were also present to support the partnership and agreed to provide media coverage for future tree planting events.
Kaptagat Girls Secondary School is the proposed location in Elgeyo Marakwet county to establish the third tree nursery, focusing on indigenous seedlings and fruit trees for the girls. Ms. Natembeya Florence, the head principal of Kaptagat Girls Secondary School, was pleased with the chance for the school since every girl may adopt and care for a tree. She also assured that the nursery will be well cared for even during the school holidays.
Last year, the Global Peace Foundation Kenya and its partners planted over fifty thousand trees across the country and are looking forward to invite more corporates to adopt their nurseries and engage other schools on environmental sustainability. A meeting will be hosted on a later date to discuss on the way forward with the project and other logistics.
