The link between academic knowledge and labor force skills has been a greater concern in Kenya. Our 8-4-4 education curriculum did not fully address the desire to ensure that academic excellence and co-curriculum activities are blended to make an all-inclusive learner. This in return has made many employers turn down promising employees or lament over an unskilled labor force. To put this into perspective, the panelists here will address the latest trends in the job market, off-classroom training, employment opportunities, and realignments needed to realize fully skilled youths in the country.

Moderator: Mr. Ed Magema, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Univus

3:45 PM-4:15 PM: Prevention of Election Violence through Peace Education

Kenya is set to hold its general elections on 9th August 2022. The recent campaign period has equally been characterized by hate speech and sometimes violence. The political sphere has been one that is very difficult to navigate, especially for women and the youth. While they may have a lot of ideologies, the instrumentalization of tribal identities and manipulation of ethnic grievances remain the primary basis of political mobilization.

This session will focus on Peace Education as a tool of peacebuilding, preventing election violence, and economic youth empowerment. Youth face significant financial, social, and economic challenges to full participation in the political and electoral processes, including intimidation, harassment, and violence. Additionally, Kenyan youth are seeking greater relevance in the political process for their engagement and future.
