Nairobi, Kenya — Global Peace Foundation Kenya (GPF Kenya), in partnership with the Chandaria Foundation, today hosted Ms. Truphena Muthoni, the current world record holder for hugging a tree continuously for over 72 hours, in a powerful engagement celebrating youth leadership and unwavering commitment to climate action.
Ms. Muthoni’s remarkable feat has emerged as a global symbol of environmental stewardship, resilience, and advocacy for nature-based solutions in the fight against climate change. In recognition of her outstanding contribution to environmental conservation, the Chandaria Foundation awarded Ms. Muthoni a 100,000-capacity tree nursery, which will be established at a school of her choice to nurture environmental responsibility among young people.
The support is part of the Chandaria Tree Nursery Initiative, an ambitious program that aligns with H.E. President William Ruto’s national call to grow 15 billion trees by 2032. To date, the initiative has successfully established 18 tree nurseries across 15 counties, making a significant contribution to Kenya’s ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, and green livelihoods agenda.
Beyond the recognition, the engagement explored a strategic partnership with Ms. Muthoni as a Climate Champion under the President’s Fellowship – Chandaria Legacy Award Initiative. The proposed collaboration aims to amplify youth-led and community-driven climate action, strengthen grassroots environmental advocacy, and inspire collective responsibility for sustainable development.
The meeting was graced by Mr. Daniel Juma, Africa Regional Representative and Country Director, Global Peace Foundation Kenya; Mr. Vincent Rapando, Chandaria Foundation; Mr. Japheth Ouda, Environment Program Manager; Mr. Vincent Ayako, Resource Mobilization and Strategic Partnerships Manager; alongside other valued partners.
Global Peace Foundation Kenya remains committed to fostering partnerships that empower young leaders, strengthen community resilience, and advance sustainable environmental solutions in line with national and global climate goals.
