Leaders of the East Africa Community and the Middle East will outline the challenges to peace and stability posed by recent developments in the region, as well as opportunities for collaborative multi-sector peacebuilding approaches based on shared values and the framework of moral and innovative leadership.

1:30 PM    Plenary II:  One Family Under God: Interreligious Approaches to Peacebuilding

Universal principles and shared values are fundamental to building social cohesion, and also provide a common platform for collaborative interfaith action for the good of the entire human family.  In this session, leaders from diverse faith traditions will examine the importance of moral authority, interfaith leadership, and interreligious cooperation for effective initiatives that address identity-based conflict, build sustainable peace, and promote shared prosperity.

Concurrent Session I:  Interfaith Working Session on Identity–Based Conflict Prevention

Building on the Global Peace Convention 2010’s Nairobi Declaration and the East African Community’s Kigali Declaration in 2014, interfaith leaders will discuss strategic applications of the agreements outlined in each, with a particular focus on initiatives to prevent identity-based conflict and youth radicalization.

IRCPT will take the lead on organizing this session. Rev. Canon Thomas Godda

Concurrent Session II:  East Africa Business Roundtable Addressing the Nexus of Business & Peace

The nexus of business and peace has become increasingly clear as the rise of identity-based violence in the East African Community impacts development and tourism. This session will examine the role of business leadership, working in collaboration with interfaith and youth initiatives, to promote values-based youth entrepreneurship, foster greater regional integration, and build sustainable peace.

9:00 AM    Plenary III:  Moral and Innovative Leadership

Leadership that is both moral and innovative is essential to addressing the roots of conflict and corruption, and to promoting equitable development within our global community.  Societies that emphasize good character, innovation and collaboration can lead the way in building peace. In this session, speakers will discuss policies and practices that promote moral and innovative leadership as necessary to advancing peace, security and sustainable development.

This session will summarize the consensus recommendations from the Faith and Business Sectors, Government, Multilateral Partners and the Youth Summit to forge partnerships for a two-year campaign designed to address identity-based conflict in East Africa. Partners that commit resources to the campaign will be recognized at this time. Working teams formed both before and after the conference will work to implement, evaluate and improve the strategic campaign components proposed during the conference.
