The Global Peace Foundation Kenya in partnership with the County Government of Kilifi, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and other youth serving organizations hosted a youth summit on the 15th-16th May 2015 at the Pwani University in Kilifi County. The summit brought together 175 Young Accountable Leaders from 35 sub-counties within Kilifi County and other neighboring counties including Mombasa, Lamu, Kwale and Taita Taveta.

The summit, convened under the theme “Enhancing youth participation in county socio-economic development and integration” aimed at sensitizing and educating young leaders from the coastal strip to take lead in working for sustainable peace and development in the region. It gave the youth and other opinion leaders a platform to address violence, extremism and radicalization issues that are common in the coastal strip. It was also designed to promote social cohesion and integration among youth from diverse theological and social persuasions.

In addition, the summit focused on creating employment opportunities for young people through business start-ups supported by the Kilifi County and the Directorate of Youth in the National Government. The young people who attended the summit participate in the forthcoming Global Peace Leadership Conference East Africa scheduled for July 2015.
